Just TOO Many!
The pet population is out of control! Please SPAY & NEUTER!

Every day thousands of animals are euthanized simply because there are not enough homes and shelters run out of space. This page is dedicated to spay (female) and neuter (male) and what we all can do to help with this crisis.

Think your “just 1 litter” won’t matter? False! Many of the animals in the shelters are “just 1 litter” animals. Also, all the little puppies/kittens from your litter take away homes from those who are already in the shelters & rescues. Again – not enough homes for them all leads to euthanasia. The animals in shelters are not just Pit Bulls, Shepherds, & Rottweilers. There are small, adorable, (sometimes purebred), perfectly adoptable cats & dogs who are unable to find homes in the limited time they have.

Did You Know...???
Average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in 1 year… 3

Average number of kittens in a litter… 4-6

In 7 years, 1 female cat and her offspring can possibly produce 420,000 cats!

Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in 1 year…2

Average number of puppies in a litter… 6-10

In 6 years, 1 female dog and her offspring can possibly produce 67,000 dogs!

Humane Society of the United States estimates that 3-4 MILLION cats and dogs are euthanized EACH year. This is a serious problem!

Myth vs. Fact
Myth – “But my pet is a purebred.” Fact – So is at least 1 out of every 4 pets brought into an animal shelter.

Myth – “But my pet is so special, I want a little one just like him/her.” Fact – A dog or cat may be a great pet, but that doesn’t mean her offspring will be a carbon copy.

Myth – “It’s better to have 1 litter first.” Fact – Medical evidence indicates just the opposite. In fact, the evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier.

Myth – “My dog is too old.” Fact – Check with your Vet before you make that decision.

Myth – “My dog is too young.” Fact – Check with your vet. Most dogs and cats can be altered as early as 4 months of age.

Myth – “I don’t’ want my male dog or cat to feel like less of a male.” Fact – Pets don’t have that kind of concept. They don’t know the difference and are not going to feel like less of a male. They won’t hold it against you for neutering them.

Other Benefits??
Yes! #1 You are NOT contributing to the pet overpopulation!

#2 – Fewer behavioral problems with your dog(s). Unaltered dogs dig out of yards, jump fences and run away more often then altered (spayed/neutered) dogs. Males can also smell a female in heat at a great distance. They will do anything and everything to get to her – it’s a natural instinct! They are persistent!! Don’t assume a fence will keep them separate and that the male will easily give up – he won’t. Neutered males are less likely to mark their territory (or your furniture).

#3 Lower dog license fee. If you have not licensed your dog yet, check with your Animal Control to see if they have some kind of voucher program to help with the cost of the surgery.

#4 Females don’t go into heat which is very messy, can attract unwanted males, and can last up to 3 weeks and twice a year!

#5 Reduced chance of mammary or uterine cancer in females. Reduced chance of testicular or prostate cancer in males.

#6 Altered males are less likely to be aggressive. This doesn’t mean they lose their instinct to protect the family, however. It means they will be less likely to go after other male dogs whether in your family or just out in public.

Where to Spay & Neuter??
For dogs, if your dog is not licensed yet or he/she is coming up for renewal, see if your Animal Control offers a voucher program.
